Software I use
Internet
-
A secure, fast, standards compliant, very extensible, good looking, and open
source browser. What else do you want?
-
It doesn't take the concept of the email reader and utterly destroy the competition as
firefox does for the browser, but it's quite good.
-
An instant messaging client that is built for gaming. It allows you to play in game,
and keeps track of the games you play.
-
An IM client that reads almost all the protocols. Incorporates them all into one.
Also does IRC well.
-
A good FTP client that is easy to use. I also use the server to host a home ftp server
for backups.
Multimedia
-
An open source image editor to rival photoshop.
-
A media player that plays all formats I've run into, can stream things to and from your
computer, and can convert one format to another (somewhat).
-
A good audio editor and recorder.
Security
-
Keep track of all your passwords, encrypted with a single password.
It also uses the clipboard, avoiding keyloggers completely.
-
Make virtual encrypted drives. The files are encrypted and decrypted as you access them.
You can make file-based containers or encrypt entire drives or partitions.
-
Hard drive data removal tool.
Could only exist on Windows
-
An excellent replacement for the default task manager, which is frequently just not enough.
-
Watches all the processes on the system and reports on everything it does to the outside system.
-
Antispyware.
Because Windows sucks.
-
Antivirus and antispyware. Superior to everything else out there.
Because Windows sucks.
-
Prevents spyware from getting on the system in the first place.
Because Windows sucks.
-
Cleans out the trash that builds up from windows doing...anything.
Because Windows sucks.
Programming
-
My editor. It has syntax highlighting and fancy plugins and such. It's not a Vi/Emacs,
but it's all I need.
-
Version control for lazy people. It saves each revision of files as you change them.
-
A good diff utility.
Miscellaneous
-
An excellent office suite that is as good as (and is compatable with) Microsoft Office.
-
The desktop client of the web application. Keep text, pictures and audio online,
sync with the client, and access from anywhere.
-
A great backup program with advanced options; FTP, emailing the log to you if it fails,
scheduling, etc. It moves around every bit of important data in our house nightly.
-
A good, free screenshot utility.
-
A mind-mapping program. In some contexts, mind-mapping is a GREAT organization scheme.
-
An imitation of the Mac dock that I use to launch everything. Instead of cluttering up my
desktop with icons, I use this, and can start programs when others are maximized.
